Brewing with the Aeropress is a wonderful blend of immersion (ala French Press) with the clean cup of a filter brew. And as a major bonus, the Aeropress is extremely portable, requires no electricity, and quite sturdy (great for camping).
In keeping with the "rugged" nature of the device, this recipe has been designed to use only that which comes with the device and requires no scales.
- Inverted method (the plunger should be "out" as far as possible to allow maximum volume in the tube.
- 1 Aeropress scoop of whole beans ground medium fine
- Water just off boil.
- Start singing 'Happy Birthday' in a nice calm pace.
- Bloom the coffee while you sing with enough water to cover the grounds.
- Vigorously swirl the Aeropress for about 10 sec (you're still singing). While you are still singing, rinse the filter with some hot water and set aside
- After you finish singing, start singing again, and slowly pour water until the tube is completely filled to the top.
- Let it sit while you finish singing, and then sing again 2 more times.
- At this point you will have sung 'Happy Birthday' 3 times and people around you will think your totally nuts. Put the top the press, turn it over onto your chosen vessel (like your mug) and press while you sing 'Happy Birthday' AGAIN. If you press to hard, you will "blow out" the filter and push grounds into your cup, and too slow, you will over extract the coffee.
Fun fact...singing 'Happy Birthday' takes approximately 30 sec. So, if you follow the above, you are blooming for about 30sec, brewing for 1 minute, and pressing for 30sec, for a total brew time of 2:00. If you have a timer handy, go ahead and used it. But, who doesn't like singing 'Happy Birthday' to them selves?
